UV protection goggles for use with the Dermfix 1000MX and Dermfix 2000SX narrowband UVB lamps.

Eye protection is required whenever either lamp is switched on. It is a condition of using the device, not a precaution left to the user's judgement. Narrowband UVB at 311nm is ultraviolet: the eye does not perceive it as brightness and there is no glare or discomfort at the time to signal that exposure is taking place. Protection goes on before the lamp is turned on and comes off only once it is turned off again.

A pair of adjustable UV protection glasses is supplied as standard with both lamps. These goggles are an alternative form of the same protection, and they answer three situations the standard glasses do not always cover.

The first is fit. Where the supplied glasses will not sit securely, or are uncomfortable over a long course of treatment, goggles are held by a strap rather than by arms over the ears.

The second is proximity. When the area under treatment is close to the eyes, a shape that seals around the eye socket is preferable to a lens held a short distance in front of it.

The third is face size. Glasses sized for an adult often sit poorly on a smaller face, children included. Goggles adjust down further.

Compatibility

Dermfix 1000MX Single-tube handheld 311nm lamp.
Dermfix 2000SX Twin-tube handheld 311nm lamp.

Both lamps are listed in UVB narrowband lamps.

Questions

Is eye protection actually required?

Yes. Approved eye protection must be worn for the whole of every session with a narrowband UVB lamp. Ultraviolet at 311nm is invisible and causes no immediate sensation, so there is nothing to alert you if the eyes are exposed.

Goggles or the standard glasses?

Either is acceptable protection. Choose goggles if the glasses do not fit well, if the treatment area is near the eyes, or if the wearer has a smaller face.

Are these suitable for a child?

The goggle form fits a smaller face more securely than adult-sized glasses. Separately from the question of eyewear, phototherapy for a child should be carried out under the direction of a doctor or dermatologist.

Do I need these if the lamp already came with eyewear?

Not necessarily. Both lamps include a pair of protective glasses when new. Order goggles as a fit alternative, as a second set where more than one person uses the lamp, or as a replacement for anything lost or damaged.
